Official Line-Up announced for Big Fun – a 2009 Philly Fringe Fest production

Philadelphia, PA – Vaudevillains NYB is pleased to announce the official line-up for Big Fun, a 3-part interdisciplinary performance piece inspired by Riverdance, Janet Jackson, orchestras, and January 1st.  Performances take place at the Barbary (951 Frankford Ave) in Fishtown for four nights only (Sept 6th at 4pm, Sept 7th at 8pm, Sept 14th and 15th at 8pm).

VNYB will be joined by Philadelphia dance troupe Club Lyfestile and a rotating line-up of area marching bands for an hour of music, dance, parading and uninhibited joy. Popular bar and dance club the Barbary will be transformed into an intimate venue with seating – accommodating 50 audience members per performance.

Members of the DIY Mummers brigade Vaudevillains NYB host each performance of Big Fun. Decked out in their trademark costumes, VNYB will present exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of their 2009 parade performance and introduce the rest of the show’s acts.

Club Lyfestile will perform three of their latest dance creations.  In “The Heist”, a group of stealthy robbers break into a bank vault and find much more than they bargained for.  “Tetristrate” features the shapes in the classic video game Tetris turn human, moving and bending to fit together. A fast, fun, and energetic dance begins, combining the beautiful marriage of a wallflower-grunge-rocker with a sassy hip-hop dancer. In “Candyland”, a seemingly innocent sugar binge leads two kids on a psychedelic journey through Candyland as their favorite candies come alive to tease and taunt them.

As stated by the Philadelphia City Paper, Club Lyfestile’s dance pieces have passion that “shines as brightly as their sequins.  Their bright and tight costumes, mostly fluorescent, look like some costumer’s coked-out fantasy for an ’80s exercise video, and lend the dancers a surreal air as they move and writhe against the backdrop of post-industrial Philly.”

For the September 7th performance only, West Philadelphia Orchestra will perform as Big Fun’s resident marching band and lead the audience in wild Balkan marches in between Club Lyfestile’s dance performances. West Philadelphia Orchestra plays music that is mostly rooted in Eastern European folk music traditions, but they do it with our own voices, Philadelphia voices nourished by jazz heritage, tinged with punk rock, soul, and cheese steaks, and blended with the voices of the Philly community. Keeping up with the spirit of Big Fun, WPO is committed to making the world a better, happier, more communal place.

The remaining three performances will feature Hoppin’ John Orchestra as the resident marching band. A group of ten professional musicians from all corners of musical Philadelphia brought together to make great music. HJO specialize a smattering of original hard-to-define compositions in several genres and subgenre’s including the New Orleans brass band style, Jazz, both modern and historic, Dixieland and pre-Rock and Roll Rhythm and Blues.

Big Fun will run approximately 50 minutes. Tickets are available in advance through the Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Box Office. In-person sales  beginning August 24 at the Hub Box Office (SW Corner of 5th and Fairmount). Tickets are also available on the web ( and by phone  215.413.1318. A limited amount of standing room tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes prior to each Big Fun performance.

VNYB and Club Lyfestile are also pleased to announce that the monthly Barbary DJ night Dance Party will take place immediately following the final performance of Big Fun on Tuesday, September 15th. Club Lyfestile Djs will be spinning their favorite dance jams in honor of Big Fun. At this time, the winners of the BIG FUNdraiser Raffle will be announced.
